Kowtow → Brand identity

Long before sustainable fashion entered the mainstream, Kowtow, founded in Wellington in 2006, was already committed to environmentally conscious clothing production. Now, as the fashion industry is flooded with brands claiming sustainability—many merely greenwashing to meet rising consumer expectations—Kowtow sought to differentiate itself with an authentic, accountable message. DMY guided Kowtow in evolving their narrative from facts and figures to a deeper, more emotive story that builds on values of community, care, and beauty. We highlighted Kowtow’s unique “off-grid mentality,” rooted in slowness, resourcefulness, and a joyful reverence for nature. Unlike fast-fashion brands, Kowtow remains steadfast in using only organic, fairly traded cotton, underscoring their dedication to ethical practices. DMY transformed these principles into a cohesive, immersive brand experience with five key touchpoints, inviting audiences to embrace a reflective, nature-aligned lifestyle. This approach cuts through the noise, positioning Kowtow as a leader in true, thoughtful sustainability.

Rebranding Kowtow Clothing involves a comprehensive strategy to refresh the brand's image while maintaining its core values of sustainability and ethical manufacturing.

DMY took Kowtow ‘off-grid’ to immerse customers in a joyful approach to contemporary life that is gentler, more reflective and more in tune with nature.

For their product campaign we took cues from Kowtow’s mono material story, focussing on the joy of simple things. The humble act of cooking for others, the tactility of fresh produce between the fingers, goofing around with friends, 'me time' with a good book.
